Open Dutch 2019: Interview met Master Willy van de Mortel

ITF Nederland faciliteert via de Master Series toernooien de ontwikkeling van ITF Taekwon-Do wedstrijdtalent in Nederland. Samen met de aangesloten clubs zetten wij prachtige evenementen op de kaart, zoals de Open Dutch, georganiseerd door Master Willy van de Mortel (Difesa Sports) en zijn team. A.s. 26 januari 2019 is de volgende editie. Wij stelden Sahyun wat vragen!

Aankomende Open Dutch zullen tegen de 750 deelnemers (ruim 1350 startplekken) uit bijna 20 landen naar Helmond komen: neem ons in vogelvlucht mee van toen naar nu, hoe heeft u dat voor elkaar gekregen en waarom?

Zo’n 14 jaar geleden ben ik gestart met het organiseren van een internationaal toernooi, genaamd de Open Brabantse. Later zetten we de naam om naar een meer internationaal aansprekende naam, namelijk de Open Dutch.

We zijn inmiddels al een aantal keren van locatie veranderd om de groei en service naar atleten, scheidsrechters, coaches en toeschouwers te verbeteren.

Ook heb ik in de loop der tijd een groep mensen om me heen verzameld die dit samen met mij mogelijk maken en die er ook veel energie in steken.

Vooral mijn werkzaamheden als coach in verschillende landen, zoals Slovenië, Italië, Nederland, Nieuw Zeeland en natuurlijk in Noorwegen, hebben denk ik bijgedragen aan de groeiende belangstelling voor de Open Dutch.

Maar ook door het verzorgen van seminars in het buitenland op aanvraag waar toch telkens contacten worden gelegd.

Waar kijkt u het meest naar uit de 26e?

Waar ik het meeste naar uitkijk is om een aantal Taekwon-Do vrienden te mogen begroeten hier in Helmond, waar ik in mijn carrière veel mee heb samengewerkt en meegemaakt. Dit is een van de sterkste punten van ons ITF Taekwon-Do

Is het einddoel bereikt voor de Open Dutch, of heeft u nog meer voor ons in petto?

Of ik nog meer in petto heb? Weet je, je bent er het hele jaar mee bezig en er liggen alweer veranderingen en plannen voor volgend jaar klaar. Het is belangrijk om te blijven luisteren naar de mensen die komen en wat met hun feedback te doen. Maar beloofd: het vat is nog niet leeg ?

Open Dutch 2019: An Interview with Master Willy van de Mortel

ITF Netherlands facilitates the Master Series tournaments, to develop competitive ITF Taekwon-Do in The Netherlands. In close cooperation with our member clubs, we realize amazing events like the Open Dutch, organized by Master Willy van de Mortel and his team. Coming January 26th is the next edition. We interviewed Master Willy!

This Open Dutch we’re expecting around 750 competitors (around 1350 entries), from 20 countries at minimum: please take us from then to now, how did you get to this point – and why?

About 14 years ago I started with the first international tournament, called the “Open Brabant”. Eventually we switched to the more internationally appealing name “Open Dutch”.

Along the way we switched locations a couple of times, to be able to handle the growth of the tournament, and to deliver a better service to the athletes, the umpires, the coaches and the supporters.

During the years we have gathered a team that really helps us realize the full potential of the tournament with the amazing effort they put into the Open Dutch.

My work as a national coach in countries like Slovenia, Italy, The Netherlands, New Zealand – and of course Norway – has certainly contributed to the growing interest in the Open Dutch.

But of course giving seminars around the world is an important factor to build relations.

What are you looking forward to the most, coming January 26th?

The thing I’m looking forward to the most is welcoming many Taekwon-Do friends I have had the honor to work with, and shared so many great experiences with, right here, in Helmond. This is one of the most beautiful aspects of our ITF Taekwon-Do community.

Has the Open Dutch come full circle, or is there more in store for us?

Whether I have more in store? You know, you are working at such a project for a year and new improvements are already planned for 2020. It is very important to keep listening to the people that grace you with their presence and do something with their feedback. But I promise: there is more where this came from 🙂
